About Us
Martyne S. (Sue) Bachmen of CHALKERS.COM has been buying, selling, and collecting cues for the past 18 years.

Martyne has been an active participant in the billiard industry for since 1990. She was the co-founder and managing partner of Chalkers, the first upscale billiard room on the West Coast, from 1990 to 2002, and is currently a partner in CHALKERS.COM, an on-line retailer specializing in custom and collectible cues.

She served as M.C. for the 1999 Gallery of American Cue Art showcase in New York, and was one of the collectors invited to exhibit at the 2002 International Cue Collectors Show in Ruidoso, New Mexico, and at every ICCS held annually since then. The 2009 ICCS, sponsored by the Academy of American Cue Art, will take place September 3-5 in Santa Fe, NM at the Inn at Loretto.

Martyne was appointed to the Academy of American Cue Art's authentication committee in 2007, in consideration of her knowledge and expertise regarding American pool cues, their makers and their history.
Over the past twelve years Martyne has written scores of articles for Billiards Digest on business and cue-related topics. Among her recent feature stories is
"A Peek Up Their Sleeves" (March 2006 issue). Martyne regularly travels around the U.S., documenting major cue exhibitions and photographing cues from the top collections. With her partner, Hugh Tiernan, she photographed over 800 new cues for the Blue Book of Pool Cues, Third Edition (2005).  Her current project is Cue Art, a 240 page coffee table-style book that will be published in 2009.
In addition to cues, Martyne has an extensive collection of Billiard Memorabilia, some of which is shown on the website. The focus of her collection is pool-related movie posters and lobby cards, and original still photographs from film and television. She also collects billiard books and photos and posters of the great players of the 20th century. Drawing on images from her collection, she developed Chalkers Billiard Images, a line of billiard-themed Post Cards and Note Cards, available on the Chalkers website.
From 1994 to 2000, Martyne (then called `Sue') competed on the Women's Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) Tour as a semi-pro. She was an active tournament promoter throughout the 1990's, hosting five pro events, numerous local and regional competitions, and many charity fund-raisers at Chalkers in San Francisco and Emeryville.
After 23 years in the Bay Area, in July 2005 Martyne and her partner relocated themselves and their business to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Hugh Tiernan of CHALKERS.COM has been in the billiard business since 1990, when he teamed up with Martyne to develop and operate Chalkers Billiard Clubs as the CFO. He is currently a partner in CHALKERS.COM.
In 2001, he became the cue photographer for the web site.  Since then, through continuous research and equipment upgrades he has perfected the difficult art of cue photography and set a standard for glare-free, high resolution photos which showcase the natural wood colors and intricate details of the cues.
In 2003, he took over web master duties and upgraded the Chalkers web site.
He and Martyne provided the cue photos for the Blue Book of Pool Cues, Third Edition. With Hugh's background as a mechanical engineer, he devised a traveling light equipment rig to tour the U.S. with Martyne to capture hundreds of the finest cue images for the new book.
Hugh and Martyne contribute the cue photos to Billiards Digest for the monthly feature “Wand Workshop”, as well as provide the illustrations for Martyne's cue-related feature stories. He has also contributed photos to InsidePOOL and Pool & Billiard magazines.
In July 2005 Hugh and his partner relocated themselves and their business to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
See the “Pool Articles” pages on for examples of Hugh's photos.
